Discerning God’s Voice

There are a lot of voices echoing out there. The world is full of opinions and ideas but how do we know what is truth? Usually when I say the Lord told me to do something people think I am crazy. They think I am hearing voices and maybe schizophrenic. I don’t hear audible voices telling me what to do. I know the voice of the Lord because I know his word and because he has filled me with the Holy Spirit. You see, God’s word(the Bible) is inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is by this same spirit I know when God is trying to say something to me. It is the same spirit that lives in each believer of Jesus. It binds us together in unity that we all might be under God’s grace as sons and daughters of the creator of all things on heaven and earth. Isn’t it such a beautiful gift. Thank you Father for sending your son that we might have the Holy Spirit!

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:26

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 27:10

The world is full of opinions and ideas but how do we know what is truth? With all of the opinions and ideals out there screaming “This is the way to go way! Follow me.” it is so easy to get off track and loose focus on Christ. Many of this starts in the mind. Proverbs 4:23 Be careful how you think for your life is shaped by your thoughts. You see much of a persons life can be changed by perspectives and ideas. That is why we are supposed to seek wisdom from the Lord.

1 Corinthians 1:25 New International Version (NIV)

25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Jesus is the way the truth and the life. As long as we focus and follow him, it’s all gravy. Sometimes the gravy is thick and sticky, slow moving. Sometimes the gravy runs easy. What ever the devil throws our way to distract us will not separate us from his love.

Romans 8:38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord

Satan is real, just as God is. That means that not all of our ideas may not be from God. 1Peter 5,8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”. Notice the instruction be of sober mind. That means being careful as to what fills our mind. The best way for the Enemy to get us away from God is to get us to believe lies. Often it looks like truth.

John 8:44 New International Version (NIV)

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Are you believing any lies? What are you focusing on? The truth of the gospel or what this world is preaching? What kind of conversations do you have, and media and  do you subscribe to. What shows are you watching on Netflix, or books do you read, and are these God honoring? There shouldn’t be any parts of our life hidden or separated form God. He wants all of us not just our quiet times or our Sunday mornings but to be involved in every aspect of our lives. This is true worship to Jesus. Worship isn’t classified by singing a song or writing or drawing a picture for the lord but it is giving him our lives. I am not saying these things are bad because they are in fact necessary. Many times does it say in throughout the Bible to sing to and celebrate God. It is important what the posture of ones heart and mind in all action and deeds not just the actions and in and of themselves. He wants to be involved in all areas of our lives not just the “churchy” areas.

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God–this is your true and proper worship.

How do we know if our thoughts, understandings, and ideas are from God and not just from ourselves, the shows we watch, or from the enemy of God( fallen angels).  One way to know is to look at the fruit of it. From thoughts come attitudes and from attitudes habits form and from that our choices are influenced. From our choices our life is formed. If the fruit of our thoughts actions and choices don’t result in us becoming more like christ or producing the fruit of the Holy Spirit it is probably not from God. The work of God in our lives result in peace, patience, joy, love, self control, kindness, goodness.

That doesn’t mean God won’t allow us to endure hardships. It is often hardships(pruning) that helps us bear more fruit.

2 Timothy 2:3 Take your part in suffering, as a loyal soldier of Christ Jesus. A soldier on active duty wants to please his commanding officer and so does not get mixed up in the affairs of civilian life.

Christians should choose to walk in step with the spirit and not the flesh no matter what ideas, thoughts, or influences we are around or even what we think. The flesh is always at war with the spirit so don’t expect it to always be even flow. Being a follower of Jesus means often denying the desires of our flesh which isn’t always easy.

Galations 5:19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Jesus lived a perfect life. He denied his flesh in obedience all the way to the cross. I am so thankful that he is strong when I am weak. I am so thankful that he took all the rejection, shame, and sin that I deserve up onto that cross. Because of him I am free to love and live as a child of God. This is such a great gift and all we have to do is believe. At the end of the day no matter what we think or perceive to be truth. The only truth we need is Jesus. In him we have everything we need. Any thoughts that make us feel guilty or condemned are definitely not from God.

Romans 8,1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

I know that being united to him I can conquer sin and death and overcome any hurdle in this life. Even in my failure I keep my hope. After all the victory of Jesus was his death on the cross. Our ideas of victory doesn’t always match with God’s version. Maybe those failures and heartbreaks are actually a victory in the kingdom. The ways of God seem to be opposite of what the world tells us. Our God humbled himself to a carpenter from Nazareth(nothing good comes form that place) to sacrifice himself on our behalf. What a rescue mission! Let us ask God to change our perspective and see things through his eyes. God is always working, always awake. Just because we don’t see the fruit he is producing in our lives doesn’t mean it is not there. We often don’t see the seed or the root of the plant and it takes time for it to grow in the dark. There are many things we are unable to see but if we stay faithful in nurturing good thoughts, habits and attitudes, and focus on relationships with Jesus and others we are bound to be blessed and bear fruit.

Psalm 1-2

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither—

whatever they do prospers.

It’s funny actually right after I began to write this post about discerning God’s voice and warfare in the mind my thoughts kind of went out of control. I started thinking about my past and thoughts of really sad events started coming to mind and these are things I never think about. I really believe that those thoughts are not from God. I believe that satan wants us to get us stuck in the negative parts of our life so that we can become hopeless.

Scripture says:

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

ANY HOPELESS THOUGHT IS A STRAIGHT UP LIE!!! For real though! As a believer in christ there is always hope! Even in the darkest most hopeless place we have the promise of completion of being raised to life with christ in eternity.

2 Corinthians 4:18 New International Version (NIV)

18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Romans 8:23-25 New International Version (NIV)

23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

I will leave you with this. Be aware of your thoughts. Test them. Look at the fruit. This is how we see the truth of the roots.

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

1 John 4- 1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

The best way to develop discernment is in the word of God.
